How to Choose a Chiropractor in Houma, LA

If you’re looking for a chiropractor in Houma, you’ve probably realized pretty quickly that not every chiropractic office is the same.

Different chiropractors use different techniques, have different areas of training, and may approach the exact same problem in very different ways. I don’t necessarily think one approach is right for every person, which is exactly why I think it is important to understand what you’re looking for before choosing an office.

Here are a few things I would consider.

1. Find a Chiropractor Who Takes the Time to Listen

This sounds simple, but I think it matters.

Your first visit should be more than walking in, getting adjusted, and walking back out the door.

I want to know why you’re there, how long the problem has been going on, what makes it better or worse, what you’ve already tried, and most importantly, what you’re hoping to accomplish with care.

Two people can walk into my office with the exact same complaint and have very different goals. One person may simply want their back to stop hurting so they can get back on the golf course. Another may be concerned about their posture or spinal alignment and want to take a more corrective approach.

Those conversations matter because your goals should help guide your care.

2. Ask How They Evaluate Their Patients

Before recommending treatment, your chiropractor should have a reason for what they are recommending.

At Main Chiropractic, my recommendations are based on your history, examination findings, and, when clinically appropriate, imaging.

I have a particular interest in spinal biomechanics, posture, and alignment, so my evaluation may also look at things like spinal curves and postural changes when they are relevant to the patient’s condition.

That doesn’t mean every patient needs the exact same examination or the exact same treatment plan. In fact, I think it should be the opposite.

Your care should make sense for you.

3. Understand Their Approach to Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic isn’t one single technique.

Some chiropractors primarily focus on symptom relief. Others incorporate rehabilitation, soft-tissue work, exercise, spinal traction, posture correction, or other techniques.

My postgraduate training is in Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP), which has given me additional training in spinal biomechanics, posture, spinal alignment, corrective exercise, and spinal traction.

That training has influenced the way I look at the spine and the way I approach certain cases—particularly when posture or spinal structure is part of what we’re trying to address.

But that doesn’t mean every person who walks through my door needs corrective care or traction.

Sometimes the goal really is just to get you feeling better and moving again.

The important part is understanding what your chiropractor is recommending, why they’re recommending it, and whether it lines up with your goals.

4. Look for Someone Who Is Willing to Explain What They Find

One of my favorite parts of practice is patient education.

If I take an X-ray, perform an examination, or find something I think is important, I want you to understand it too.

I don’t want you leaving my office with a list of things that are supposedly “wrong” with you and no idea what any of it means.

At your Report of Findings at Main Chiropractic, we’ll sit down and go through what I found, what I think is important, and what your options are moving forward.

I’ll explain my recommendations, but ultimately, you get to decide what type of care makes sense for you.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

You should feel comfortable asking your chiropractor questions.

Some good ones include:

● What did you find during my examination?

● What are we trying to accomplish with care?

● Why are you recommending this treatment?

● How often do you recommend I come in?

● How will we know if I’m improving?

● Will you reassess me?

● What can I do outside of the office to help?

A good treatment plan should have a purpose.

And you should understand that purpose.
